April is the month Türkiye switches from winter planning to outdoor planning. The days run past thirteen hours, the hills inland are still green, Istanbul's parks fill with tulips, and the big archaeological sites are comfortable to walk at midday. What April isn't, for most people, is beach weather. The air on the south coast gets properly warm, but the sea is still catching up.
This guide uses official long-term averages from the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM), not guesses, and goes region by region so you can decide where to spend your days.
For sightseeing, yes, it's one of the easiest months of the year. Daytime temperatures in Istanbul, the Aegean and the Antalya coast sit somewhere between a warm spring day and early summer, so long walks around Ephesus, Hierapolis or the old city in Istanbul don't wear you out the way they can in July.
The trade-offs are simple. April still has rain, roughly one day in three in most regions on the long-term average. Nights inland are cold, especially in Cappadocia. And if your idea of a holiday is long swims, the Mediterranean at around 18 °C will feel fresh rather than inviting. Pick April for walking, ruins, flowers and road trips, and treat any swim as a bonus.
These are MGM monthly averages for April. Use them for planning, not as a forecast for a particular week.

Antalya, İzmir, Denizli and Nevşehir are 1991–2020 normals; Istanbul is MGM's long-term record for 1950–2025.
Two things stand out. First, the south and west coasts are about four or five degrees warmer by day than Istanbul and Cappadocia. Second, April is a month of fast change on the coast: Antalya's average high climbs from 18.4 °C in March to 21.8 °C in April and 26.4 °C in May. Late April usually feels noticeably warmer than the first week.
MGM's 1970–2025 averages for April:
So the Mediterranean is the only sea where a swim is realistic for most people, and even there 18 °C is a quick, bracing dip. It warms to 20.8 °C on average in May. If you're heading for Side or Antalya, pack a swimsuit and see how you feel on a sunny afternoon; don't plan the week around the beach.
Light is one of April's quiet advantages. Across the month you gain about an hour of daylight.

Türkiye stays on UTC+3 all year. Once the UK and the EU move their clocks forward on 28 March 2027, Türkiye is two hours ahead of the UK and one hour ahead of Central Europe for the whole of April.
The south coast is the warmest part of the country in April and the most comfortable base if you want sun. Around 21–22 °C by day with an average of 7.7 hours of sunshine is ideal for walking among the ruins of Side, which sit right on the water, and for long lunches outside.
It's also a good month for the river and the coast without the summer heat. The Manavgat river cruise leaves the river at 10:00, spends two to three hours on the boat with lunch on board and swimming breaks, then stops at Manavgat Waterfall and the local bazaar, finishing around 15:30. In April the swim stops are for the brave, but the river scenery and the waterfall work in any weather.
If you want to try diving, the Side undersea museum diving tour is built for beginners: two dives, one at 4 metres and one at about 8 metres among statues on the seabed, each one-to-one with an instructor and with the equipment included. With the sea near 18 °C, ask about the water on the day you book. Tour dates vary by season, so check availability on the tour page.
April is tulip month. The city plants millions of bulbs every year; in 2026 it was 3.58 million, according to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, across Emirgan Grove, Gülhane Park, Göztepe 60. Yıl Park and Hıdiv Kasrı. Peak bloom usually comes in mid-April, and the city's Tulip Festival weekend in 2026 was 11–12 April. The 2027 dates are announced each spring, so look them up closer to the time. Emirgan, on the European shore of the Bosphorus, is the classic choice.
Highs around 17 °C are good walking weather for the old city, but evenings by the water get cool, so bring a layer for a Bosphorus ferry. If you'd rather not juggle trams and taxis between sights, the Istanbul tour with driver covers Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Palace, the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar, a Bosphorus drive and Dolmabahçe Palace in eight hours with a chauffeur and a guide. Museum entrances and meals are not included.
Cappadocia is the coolest stop on most April itineraries. Average highs of about 16 °C are perfect for valley walks, but the average low is around 5 °C and it often feels colder at dawn, which is exactly when balloons fly. April also has the most rainy days of the regions in this guide, about 11.
Balloon flights depend on the wind and are approved or cancelled on the morning itself under the civil aviation authority's flag system. If the balloon matters to you, spend at least two nights so you have a spare morning.
For the classic sights in a day, the Cappadocia Red Tour visits Paşabağ (Monks Valley), the Zelve Open-Air Museum, Devrent Valley, Love Valley and the Uçhisar viewpoint, with a pottery workshop and a Turkish lunch. Its page lists an English-speaking guide, entrance fees to the listed attractions and pickup from your Cappadocia hotel.
The İzmir area averages about 21 °C in April, which is about as good as it gets for Ephesus. The marble streets and the theatre have almost no shade, and in July they are punishing at midday. In April you can walk the full length of the site, see the Library of Celsus and the Great Theatre, and stay on for photos without counting the minutes. Opening hours change with the season; check muze.gov.tr for the week you visit.
Denizli also averages about 21 °C by day in April, with cooler nights near 10 °C. The travertine terraces are walked barefoot all year, so April's mild air makes that part easier than in winter, and the green valley below makes a pretty backdrop.
From the Antalya coast it's a long day. The Side Pamukkale and Hierapolis day tour lasts about 16 hours, starts with an early hotel pickup and lists breakfast, lunch, dinner and a licensed guide as included. The Pamukkale-Hierapolis entrance and Cleopatra's Pool are not included and are paid on site.
Ten days, two flights, no rush:
If you're travelling around 23 April, book Cappadocia hotels early and leave a little slack in your road plans for the holiday weekend.
For an autumn comparison, see our guide to Turkey in October.
On the south and west coasts, yes: Antalya, İzmir and Denizli all average highs of about 21–22 °C in April. Istanbul averages about 17 °C and Cappadocia about 16 °C, with cold nights inland.
On the Mediterranean, briefly. The long-term average sea temperature off the Antalya coast in April is 18.1 °C. The Aegean averages 15.9 °C and the Sea of Marmara 11.3 °C, which most people find too cold.
There is some rain everywhere. MGM averages range from about 8 rainy days in Antalya to about 11 in Cappadocia, with monthly totals of roughly 45–65 mm. Plan an indoor or flexible option for each region.
Balloons fly in April, but every flight depends on the morning's wind and is approved or cancelled on the day. Staying at least two nights gives you a second chance.
Usually in April, with peak bloom around mid-month. The city's Tulip Festival weekend in 2026 was 11–12 April, and the main displays are in Emirgan Grove, Gülhane Park, Göztepe 60. Yıl Park and Hıdiv Kasrı.
Yes, one: 23 April, National Sovereignty and Children's Day, which falls on a Friday in 2027. There are no religious holidays in April 2027.
Layers. Light clothes for coastal afternoons, a warm jacket for Cappadocia and evenings by the water, a light rain jacket and comfortable walking shoes.
